What Wears Out First — Pads or Rotors?
In most cases, brake pads wear out first and rotors wear out gradually. But 4WD owners who tow or drive under heavy load often see both wear faster.
Why Brake Pads Wear Faster
Brake pads are made from a friction material designed to wear down slowly over time. Every time you brake, a small amount of pad material is removed. Pads wear faster due to towing or heavy loads, stop-start city driving, steep downhill braking, off-road dust and grit, and aggressive braking. Towers and tradies typically go through pads far more frequently than daily drivers because of the extra kinetic energy that needs to be managed.
Why Rotors Wear Too
Brake rotors are made from hardened metal, but they still wear down as pads bite into them. Heat is the biggest enemy. Rotors can warp, develop “hot spots”, crack under extreme heat, or wear thin over time. Towing or heavy braking can rapidly increase rotor temperature, especially on steep descents like Cunningham’s Gap or the Toowoomba Range.
