What Is an Intake Manifold Clean?

Over time, soot and carbon deposits build up inside your diesel engine’s intake manifold, restricting airflow and affecting engine efficiency. This buildup is caused by a combination of EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) systems and oil vapour returning through the intake.

An intake manifold clean involves chemically or mechanically removing these deposits to restore proper airflow and combustion balance — especially critical in modern turbo diesels.

Symptoms of a Dirty Diesel Intake System

Not sure if your manifold needs cleaning? Look out for these common signs:

  • Reduced Power and Acceleration: A clogged inlet manifold can restrict the proper amount of air and fuel mixture to your engine, resulting in a significant loss of power and acceleration while off-roading.
  • Rough idling or hard starting: A rough idle is a sign that your engine is not getting enough air and fuel mixture to operate smoothly, indicating a clogged inlet manifold.
  • Reduced fuel economy or Poor Fuel Economy: A clogged inlet manifold can cause your engine to work harder, leading to a higher fuel consumption and lower fuel economy, which can be a major problem when embarking on long off-road trips.
  • Excess smoke from the exhaust
  • Delayed throttle response
  • Check engine light or DTC codes

If any of the above sound familiar, a diesel intake clean may be the fix your engine needs. In extreme cases, carbon build up can cause serious damage to the engine

Why You Need Regular Manifold Maintenance

Ignoring a dirty manifold can lead to more serious (and costly) issues over time. Regular diesel intake manifold cleaning ensures:

  • Improved Performance: Removing carbon deposits, oil, and debris from the inlet manifold can help your engine get the proper amount of air and fuel mixture, resulting in improved power and acceleration, making it easier to tackle tough terrains.
  • Better Fuel Economy: By operating more efficiently, your engine will consume less fuel, resulting in better fuel economy and a longer range, a major benefit when off-roading.
  • Longer Engine Life: Regular maintenance, including cleaning the inlet manifold, can prevent damage to other engine components such as the valves and pistons, extending the life of your engine and ensuring you get the most out of your 4WD.
  • We generally recommend an Inlet Manifold Clean Prior to having your 4WD tuned for older diesel engines.  Previously we’ve seen measurable HP increase on the Dyno just from cleaning a severely clogged inlet manifold.

We recommend scheduling an intake clean every 50,000–70,000 km, especially for vehicles used for towing or city driving.

Our Cleaning Process: Safe, Thorough, Effective

At BB Garage, we offer both non-invasive cleaning methods (via intake cleaner solutions and machine) and manifold removal + deep cleaning depending on the level of carbon buildup, typically referred to as an “off car inlet manifold clean”.

  • On-car Inlet Manifold Clean – this uses a specialty tool and cleaning solution to flush and clean inlet manifolds while the manifold stays attached to the car.  This is a great cost-effective option for vehicles with difficult to remove manifolds or for 4WDs with less build up as a preventative option.
  • Off Car Inlet Manifold Clean – this provides a premium clean to the inlet manifold.  The manifold is removed and cleaned twice; firstly it is cleaned manually to remove the bulk of the build up and then it is put in a specialty ultrasonic bath to bring it back to near-new condition.

My 200 series had an EGR flow code. BB Garage suggest an intake clean. They carried out the work well and so far no problems. Bodie was knowledgeable and friendly. I would return for future work. Cheers Guys

FAQs

How often should I get a diesel intake clean?

We recommend every 50,000 to 70,000 km — especially if you drive short distances or tow regularly.

Will cleaning the manifold improve performance?

Yes — expect smoother throttle response, more torque, and better fuel economy. We’ve also been able to measure the increased functional Horsepower an engine can produce when the inlet manifold is no longer constricted with carbon build up.

Can I use diesel intake cleaner myself?

While DIY cleaners exist, they don’t reach all areas and can be risky without proper tools. We recommend professional cleaning for full effectiveness.

Is this the same as EGR cleaning?

No — but both systems are connected. We can advise if your EGR system also needs service.
