A quality oil catch can is one of the simplest upgrades you can make to protect a modern diesel. It captures oily blow‑by vapour before it coats your intake, turbo and EGR system with sludge, helping maintain performance and reducing long‑term repair bills.
After fitting and servicing many brands over the years, we’ve decided to supply and install HPD (High Performance Diesel) catch cans exclusively. Below we’ll explain the reasoning—without throwing shade at the alternatives.
What We Like About HPD
| Feature | Benefit on the road |
| All‑alloy construction | Billet aluminium body, Viton seals and braided hoses handle corrugations, heat soak and high boost without cracking. |
| Filter‑free baffling | No consumable element means routine maintenance is a quick drain and clean—easy for DIY owners and fleet managers alike. |
| Consistent flow | The chamber’s internal design balances separation efficiency with healthy crankcase ventilation, so performance doesn’t drop off between services. |
| Local support | HPD is Australian‑made and offers fast parts turnaround plus model‑specific brackets. |
Why We Don’t Stock Provent
MANN+HUMMEL’s Provent catch cans are well‑engineered and have a strong following—especially among drivers who are meticulous about servicing. They use a replaceable fibre element that captures very fine oil mist. In our workshop, though, we’ve found that:
- The disposable filter adds an ongoing cost most customers prefer to avoid.
- If that element isn’t changed on schedule, it can restrict crankcase flow.
- Many of our clients tour remotely or clock unpredictable kilometres, so sticking to the exact change interval isn’t always practical.
These points led us to settle on HPD as the better fit for our customer base. That doesn’t mean Provent is “bad”‑‑it simply suits a different maintenance style.
FAQ
Will an HPD catch can void my new‑car warranty?
No. The kit installs in line with factory crankcase plumbing and is fully reversible. We mount using existing holes—no drilling.
How often should I service it?
Check and drain the reservoir at each oil change (about every 10 000 km). Give the internals a wipe at 40 000 km.
Can I install it myself?
If you’re comfortable with basic hand tools and hose clamps, yes. Otherwise, book in and we’ll handle the fit‑up.
The Take‑Away
Choosing a catch can isn’t just about spec sheets—it’s about day‑to‑day practicality. For our customers—many of whom drive long distances, tow heavy loads or head off‑grid—HPD’s robust build and low‑maintenance design offer the best balance of protection, simplicity and peace of mind.
